Citigroup Global Markets has estimated that the Federal Opposition’s alternative to the National Broadband Network (NBN) will cost taxpayers $16.7 billion and would be completed by 2018.

The Opposition’s plan would likely see a halt to the construction of the NBN, while performing a cost-benefit analysis that would likely lead to a shift towards fibre to the node (FTTN)

“We forecast the Coalition Policy to save $19bn in capital expenditure compared to the NBN, excluding infrastructure payments to Telstra in both scenarios (Labor and Coalition). These costs assume 100% government funding and do not factor in the possibility of joint private investment in areas requiring new infrastructure investment,” the report found.
