The Australia Japan Cable company has announced it has selected Ciena to conduct its 40G upgrade that will add a further 560 Gbps of capacity to its 12,700km network between Australia, Guam and Japan.

The new upgrade will be based on Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform featuring its WaveLogic coherent processors, which will support a future migration to 100G technology.

“We selected Ciena after a stringent selection and trial process because of their demonstrable track record in deploying 40G Coherent solution for segments over 7,000 kilometers in reach. The ability to expeditiously augment AJC’s existing capacity plus support OTN services from day one also played a key role noting the continually increasing data volumes carried by AJC,” AJC CEO David Crofts said.

The upgrade will be rolled out over two stages, with the link between Australia and Guam to receive an additional 320 Gbps in capacity, while the final link to Japan is scheduled for a 240 Gbps upgrade.
