Technology sector stalwart Peter Coroneos has announced he will retire from his role as chief executive of the Internet Industry Association in June.

Mr Coroneos, who has become synonymous with the internet industry over the last decade and a half, announced his plans at the IIA’s 15th annual dinner.

The Federal Attorney General Robert McClelland, who addressed the IIA dinnner, paid tribute to Mr Coroneos’ achievements particularly his stewardship of the icode, the first voluntary ISP code of practice.

According to IIA Chairman Bruce Linn: “The issues we have confronted as an industry have been complex, sometimes controversial but always central to the ongoing development of the internet in Australia. We have punched far above our weight due in large measure to Peter’s passion, commitment and breadth of understanding.”

He said that the IIA would commence a national recruitment programme to find a replacement for Mr Coroneos. As for Peter Coroneos himself, his immediate post retirement plans are to “go surfing.”
