Australians will soon have access to world-beating download speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps under a new wholesaler plan announced by the National Broadband Network Co (NBN Co)

ISPs are to be charged $150 for the top tier 1Gbps plan, which will also offer upload speeds of up to 400Mbps.

The new tier will not require any additional NBN equipment to deliver the speeds, according to the NBN Co.

Also announced earlier last week was two new tiers of speeds. With the company outlining a 500 MBPs download to 200 Mbps upload valued at $100, and a 250 Mbps to 100 Mbps at $70.

NBN Co's Head of Product & Sales, John Simon, said the fibre network was built with 1 Gigabit speeds in mind and is capable of supporting even higher speeds.

"We are confident there will be a healthy market for higher speed tiers. Global broadband leaders such as South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan and the United States already offer 1 Gigabit connections to homes and businesses," Mr. Simon said.
