NBN Co is testing its method for upgrading FTTN connections.

Fifty fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) users will receive an upgrade to either fibre-to-the-curb (FTTC) or fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology as part of a new work program called ‘Change of Access Technology’ or COAT.

Reports say COAT is a system for testing future upgrade paths for NBN Co’s customer base, helping the company fulfil its government mandate for the entire network footprint to achieve peak speeds of 25Mbps.

The recent COAT announcement is the first appearance of FTTC as an upgrade option.

NBN Co says that COAT will be fully operational in Q1 2020.
