Leighton subsidiary Visionstream has been awarded a $334 million contract by the National Broadband Network Co (NBN Co) to roll out fibre optic broadband in Victoria, Queensland and southern NSW.

The contract will run for two years, and an additional two one-year options to renew, and will expand on existing construction efforts the aforementioned states.

NBN Co’s Chief Operating Officer, Ralph Steffens, said that the contracts were crucial for the rollout of the service.

“Under the contract announced today the contractor will be responsible for the rollout of the passive network from the fibre access node (FAN) all the way to the box outside the home, making it ready to connect to the network when the occupants order a service from their chosen provider,” Mr Steffens said.

The company is already responsible for the rollout of the NBN in established communities in Tasmania and in new developments in Victoria and Queensland. The company is also building the first stage of the NBN transit network, which connects communities to the network via rings of backbone fibre-optic cables.
