Technical Officer - Communications Group, Potts Hill

The Technical Officer (Grade 1) provides operational support to policing through technical services, and is responsible for the timely completion of urgent and routine maintenance and repair to communications equipment.
 
Key accountabilities
  • Repair, maintain, replace and install radio communications equipment to ensure adequate communications service is provided.
  • Provide technical services for planned operations and for incidents at short notice to maintain provision of communications service to operational police.
  • Provide communications and technical support in emergency, covert and other special operations to enable communications to be maintained.
  • Maintain and update Job Tracking and Asset databases to enable accurate records to be kept.
  • Required to move heavy equipment, including batteries and drums of data cables, in remote locations to ensure communications equipment is properly maintained and serviced.
  • Capacity to be available for call-out duties, weekend shifts and to travel to provide operational support, to provide 24/7 communications support to operational police. 
Key challenges
  • Understanding the state-wide network, infrastructure and capabilities in a highly technical environment with system users who are generally not knowledgeable in the technical aspects of their devices.
  • Understanding the operational impacts of their role as it applies to field users and Radio Operations Centres and ensuring that actions are mindful of the requirement to prioritise workloads to maintain voice and data communications wherever possible.
  • Understanding the limitations of their authority with respect to a complex system that may produce faults or occurrences that cannot all be specifically covered by a unique process or procedure.

Essential requirements - applicants must:

  • possess UEE30911 Certificate III in Electronics and Communications (including completion of elective units UEENEEH172A (Troubleshoot communications systems) and UEENEEH127A (Set up and adjust commercial radio frequency (RF) transmission and reception systems) or equivalent qualifications.
  • be able to undertake specialised in-service course such as Working at Heights.
  • hold a current driver’s licence with no traffic offences recorded on their driving history within the last six (6) months or NSW Police Force Bronze Certification.
