Do work that makes a difference

We are looking for a Research Engineer to design, develop and coordinate the timely fabrication of a number of devices and systems that are associated with the banknote authentication and quality assurance processes. This is a great opportunity to contribute to a unique job function, developing equipment to assist with the quality and authentication of Australia’s currency. You will work independently in running projects and managing your time to deliver these projects, which will prove to be challenging but also rewarding. Within this role you will be responsible for the following:

  • Provide technical expertise in the design, development, fabrication, installation and maintenance of banknote authentication and assessment devices, including software and hardware engineering.
  • Manage instrument development projects including all necessary specifications, materials and fabrication
  • Ensure projects are planned, managed and completed within agreed times and cost estimates.
  • Provide a high level of technical support at all times for all internal and external stakeholders.

Your team

Reporting into the Manager of Research Projects, you will work in a team made up of Research Scientists and Engineers.

Your background

We seek individuals that could come from a broad range of backgrounds, including robotics, mechanical/electronic or mechatronic engineering in a university, small engineering firm or otherwise.  You will have strong experience in programming, integration, design and fabrication and experience in optoelectronic sensor technologies or related would be highly desirable. More specifically we are looking for:

  • Advanced knowledge in translating conceptual studies and specifications into prototypes, integrating electronic, software, and mechanical systems technologies.
  • Knowledge of ISO9001 Quality Systems, Safety-in-Design principles, and an understanding of the quality critical aspects of the processes and ability to control and monitor outputs.
  • Demonstrated skills in computer programming languages (for example C, C++, VHDL, R, Python) and instrument design software packages (such as CAD, Altium and/or Solidworks).
  • Demonstrated experience in the manufacture of instrumentation and device packaging.
  • Experience in project management, in particular design and development of instruments and electronic devices.
  • You will have relevant tertiary qualifications in electronic or systems engineering or related field, and/or related relevant equivalent experience.
