Clinical Data Programmer

About the opportunity 

The NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre uses a variety of systems to collect and process data associated with numerous clinical research projects. The Clinical Trials team is looking for a qualified and experienced Clinical Data Programmer who will be responsible for applying advanced programming skills to:

  • Extract data from clinical data systems; conduct extensive data quality checks (to identify issues to be queried/resolved);
  • Derive and report study conduct metrics; and,
  • Prepare datasets in suitable format for statistical analysis.

The Clinical Data Programmer will report to the Clinical Data Management Lead, to provide data management support to the clinical trials under their control. They will exercise independent judgement in the design and performance of data management activities and tasks on complex clinical trials.

They will work to the clinical trial protocol and clinical trial objectives and will typically draw from their previous experience in this field to successfully deliver on key accountabilities. They will provide expert advice related to the data collection, analysis and reporting for the clinical trial they are undertaking with highly complex issues referred to the trial biostatistician.

The incumbent is expected to carry out routine tasks autonomously, with minimal guidance and/or supervision once process/procedure is agreed upon and/or learnt. Non-routine complex research matters may be carried out under broad guidance from the supervisor. The job-holder will be expected to prioritise their own work to meet any deadlines and clinical trial needs. They will also be required to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide input on data collection, database construction, study planning, and study conduct.

About you

  • tertiary qualification in a computing or data science field with at least 4 years subsequent relevant experience.
  • accomplished data programmer with ability to rapidly develop expertise using SAS, or other data querying tools (e.g. SQL), programming languages (e.g. Python, Java) and statistical packages (e.g. R, Stata). Experience with reporting & analytics tools (e.g. SAP BO, Qlik, Tableau) is advantageous.
  • demonstrated experience in data management in clinical trials, and a proven ability to handle large data sets, including reporting and other evaluation procedures.
  • strong IT skills including reporting software, MS Office applications, web-based clinical trial data collection systems, and strong conceptual ability to learn new software applications quickly.
  • high level problem solving, analytical, and strategic thinking skills and an ability to evaluate and recommend changes to existing processes and procedures for greater effectiveness.
The successful candidate will also have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day to day operational matters. They will be able to work both independently and within a team. They will also have excellent time management skills with a strong focus on quality of work.
