CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellow in Representations for Computational Robot Design

The Opportunity
  • Do you have an interest in computational robot design?
  • Use your skills to create models and modify simulators
  • Join CSIRO’s Data61, the largest data innovation group in Australia

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience.  These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

In this position you will undertake research at the intersection of computational design, evolutionary algorithms, and modelling/simulation.

As the successful candidate you will generate innovative and transformative algorithms that create new, highly functional morphologies for novel soft robots.  Your main focus will be on powerful software representations and encodings that allow suitable exploration of the robotic design space, as well as providing a range of high-performance robots that can be physically instantiated through multi-material 3D printing.

Your duties will include:
  • Develop new representations for designing soft robots, combining state of the art techniques across, e.g., machine learning, generative design, topology optimisation.
  • Carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Recognise and exploit opportunities for innovation and the generation of new theoretical perspectives, and progress opportunities for the further development or creation of new lines of research.

Location:  Pullenvale QLD
Salary:  AU$83k – AU$94k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure:  Specified term of 3 years
Reference:  68578

To be considered you will need:
  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as computational design, machine learning, evolutionary algorithms, soft robotics, structural optimisation.

Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.

  • Demonstrated experience and skill in computational design or evolutionary robotics.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
