PhD top-up scholarship - Security, Privacy and Trust for Precision Health Platforms

CSIRO’s Data61 is offering a PhD top-up scholarship to conduct research into Security, Privacy and Trust for Precision Health Platforms. The project is funded by CSIRO’s Precision Health Future Science Platform, which aims to deliver an integrated platform that can be used to proactively manage a person's health throughout the course of their life through highly tailored food, nutrition and lifestyle interventions. The successful candidate will join a diverse team of researchers and students in Data61's Distributed Systems Security group who are looking at building a secure digital future for Australia and beyond.

Project Details:
The student will work/collaborate towards developing security/privacy protocols that establish trust in data platforms so that data sources (people and health organizations) will feel safer to provide consent. We are looking for students who are currently working on (or would like to work on) and has relevant skills in the following:

  1. Applications of Machine learning/Artificial intelligence for security and privacy of data and platform.
  2. Software developments with security and privacy into consideration.
  3. Knowledgeable in python and containerized environment.

You will have the opportunity to develop their own ideas and approaches, while being part of and learning best practices from a diverse team of experts at CSIRO’s Data61 and the Future Science Platform.

Location:   Marsfield, NSW, Australia
Scholarship:  Top-up scholarship of $7,000 per annum for three years, plus a generous budget of $6,000 for operating expenses and learning and development for the term of scholarship.

Pre-Requisites/Eligibility:
To be eligible to apply you must have:

  • first-class honours or equivalent in a relevant research area
  • admission to an Australian University as a Ph.D. student
  • a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or university equivalent; and
  • a university supervisor who is willing and able to supervise you.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and provide a National Police Check or equivalent.

If you have already commenced your Ph.D. studies, we prefer (not mandatory) you to be less than 24 months into your Ph.D. on 1 Feb 2021. The term of scholarship will be reduced by periods of study already consumed towards the degree.

In all respects, recipients of awards will be regarded as students of the University at which they are registered, and all rules relating to degree candidature and the primary award will apply. Recipients will undertake research at CSIRO as a student of the university concerned and will not be employees of CSIRO.

International applicants must have the appropriate immigration approvals to allow them to take up the scholarship. 

The successful student must be residing in Australia to commence their Ph.D. and take up the CSIRO Postgraduate Top-Up Scholarship by no later than 30 June 2021.

Applications will be assessed on:

  1. Quality and relevance of student project: Student’s current Ph.D. works/projects and its alignment with the advertised research area.
  2. Academic calibre of the student: The quality of the student is also critical to the assessment of a scholarship. Candidate’s degree and publications will be considered.
  3. Availability of appropriate university supervision:  The students’ research will be co-supervised by CSIRO and university scientists. Thus, the university supervisor’s willingness to supervise the student in collaboration with the CSIRO supervisor should also be made clear.
