Database Programmer - Applied Aquaculture Breeding

The Position
CSIRO Aquaculture Program requires the services of a suitably qualified and experienced database software engineer to work on industry breeding programs in the rapidly advancing aquaculture industry. The successful applicant will be located in Hobart and will work on maintaining and developing Oracle database solutions for aquaculture projects.

You will gain an understanding of aquaculture breeding programs and, in particular, design database solutions and write supporting software. You will be expected to collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary research team and to carry out tasks autonomously in support of scientific research.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop an understanding of the science behind an applied aquaculture selective breeding program and its integrated data sets.
  • Contribute to the design and development of original database solutions and experimental software in support of existing and further research.
  • Assist in the development of web based outputs and reporting tools for data retrieval.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with key client representatives and research collaborators to ensure relevance and quality of research outputs.

Salary:       $95K - $103K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in computer science or software engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in the database building process from initial system specification to maintaining the system in production.
  • Demonstrated ability to write database related support software including SQL.
  • Ability to solve and create original data solutions to experimental research and scientific problems.
