The Software Engineer will work in a diverse team maintaining and developing innovative software applications and tools associated with the visualisation and management of MNF vessel data.

The role of Technical Staff in CSIRO is to provide support for scientific research in a diverse range of laboratory and field situations across a range of different research projects. This support consists of the application of accepted technical practices and the development of new practices. At senior levels staff may be involved in management of a facility or service and negotiations with external clients/industry.

The Software Engineer will sit within the Scientific Data Systems (SDS) Group, which is part of the Engineering and Technology Program in CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere (O&A), and provide Data Management infrastructure to the Marine National Facility (MNF). 

Your duties will include

  • Develop innovative software systems to support the tracking, publication and reuse of scientific data sets.
  • Take responsibility for the development and maintenance of web-based systems, services and tools for the management and visualisation of a wide range of scientific and geospatial data.
  • Undertake stakeholder engagement and develop interoperable data systems for the dissemination of MNF data.  
  • Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Values, Health, Safety and Environment plans and policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.

To be successful you will need

Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all selection criteria can be appointed.

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science/or reated discipline and/or experience working in the design and development of web-based data driven systems.
  • Demonstrated computing skills as follows:
    • Ability to program in modern object oriented languages (e.g. Python, Java etc.) and experience with frameworks, libraries and languages relevant to the development of data systems and web-based applications,
    • Windows/Linux network administration skills,
    • An understanding of software engineering methodologies and version control systems.
  • Experience in, or a strong willingness to support, the standards-based management, visualisation and dissemination of scientific data.
  • Familiarity with relational databases.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills. A demonstrated ability to clearly document software, data flows and to produce manuals and/or reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and meet goals, working with clients under limited direction to mutually agreed outcomes and specific deadlines.
