CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computer Vision for Feature Extraction in Biological Specimens

The Opportunity
  • Work closely with CSIRO scientists and curators in the National Research Collections Australia.
  • Develop general methods for automating the analysis of domain specific imagery and video.
  • Join CSIRO - Australia's premier science and technology research organisation.

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral work experience.
As a member of the Platform team you will work with top CSIRO scientists and engineers to develop new computer vision, machine learning and artificial intelligence methods with a specific emphasis on solving significant science questions. Together we will build the next generation of science tools using high-performance computing infrastructure and cloud technologies to underpin the next generation of Australian science.

Specifically, you will work closely with CSIRO scientists and curators in the National Research Collections Australia. You will design new Machine Learning approaches to trait extraction and specimen identification from images of biological collection specimens. Efficient extraction algorithms of specimen trait data  (e.g. size, shape, colouration, length or area measurements, surface structure pattern recognition, and presence/absence or counts of organs) can be challenging to develop as traits can be ambiguous, affected by occlusion, or otherwise difficult to learn due to limited access to example specimens.

Diagnostic and identification tools developed around such new extraction algorithms will facilitate research in species delimitation, evolutionary biology, diagnostic and identification tools, and biodiversity discovery. This research will aid in the understanding, conservation and management of the unique Australian phytoplankton, flora and fauna.

Your duties will include:
  • Developing general methods for automating the analysis of domain specific imagery and video.
  • Implementing methods efficiently using programming tools such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
  • Carrying out evaluation of the developed software to demonstrate its competitiveness and fitness for purpose. Taking responsibility for functionality, performance and robustness.

Location: Canberra, ACT
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years
Salary:  AU$86K – AU$94K + up to 15.4% superannuation
Reference:  69989

To be considered you will need:
  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as computer vision, machine learning, artificial intelligence or computer science. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, potentially regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
  • Solid knowledge of computer vision and machine learning, and the ability to understand and develop mathematically founded algorithms and their development in toolkits such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • High level computational and programming skills (in Python or C++) to build computer vision/machine learning models and conduct analyses.
  • Experience or interest in one or more of the following: deep neural networks including recurrent neural networks, zero- or few-shot learning, graph convolutional networks and fine-grained classification.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
  • A sound history of publication in peer reviewed journals and/or authorship of scientific papers, reports, grant applications or patents.
  • A record of science innovation and creativity, including the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
