The Opportunity

  • Are you a Data Scientist that wants to make a difference to our community?
  • Provide key science to support our community’s sustainability and resilience to natural disasters.
  • Join CSIRO and support Australia's premier scientific organisation!

As a crucial member to our team – and ultimately to the community – you will be joining the Bushfire Adaptation team, initially focusing on two main projects, the development of a national bushfire hazard mapping system and an app to collect information on the impacts of bushfire on the community.

The Spatial Data Scientist role will be responsible for processing various spatial and non-spatial data, including remotely sensed data streams. You will be involved in the design and implementation of data workflows and analytic systems that profile bushfire hazard and the context of bushfire loss.

Your additional responsibilities will include the following:

  • Process and model spatial and environmental datasets.
  • Analyse risk and hazards to develop mitigation strategies.
  • Process large datasets using programming skills that include python, C, C++, C sharp and R.
  • Develop workflows using ArcGIS or QGIS, to process and analyse geospatial data.
  • Utilise parallel and distributed computing resources, including cloud platforms (AWS, Google and/or Azure).
  • Implement statistical, physical and process models that report on environmental processes, including vegetation growth, biomass accumulation and dynamics, fire hazard and intensity.

    • Computing platforms (e.g. workstation, distributed, GPU computing)
    • Programming languages (e.g. Python, R, C++, JavaScript) as required
    • Version control software.
