CSIRO’s Applied Physics Group is a diverse team of scientists, engineers and research staff which develops devices and engineered systems for the benefit industrial partners including in aerospace, space, defence, renewable energy, telecommunications, minerals and mining, and transportation. In particular, quantum devices is an area for significant expansion and we are seeking to fill a number of exciting new roles across the group.

As the Senior Research Engineer – Electronics, you will join the Electromechanical Development team. This is a ground-breaking team developing quantum sensing technologies for use in a variety of cutting-edge applications. Using your analogue electronics experience and familiarity with inter-chip communication protocols, you will contribute to device development which is essential to complete key project deliverables.

This role is offered on a full-time, part-time (minimum 0.8 FTE) or job share basis (if circumstances permit).

Your duties will include:

  • Designing, constructing, programming and documenting electronic control and support systems for the various CSIRO projects.
  • Developing electronic modules of research prototype systems including:
    • Testing and validation.
    • Mechanical design.
    • Electronic circuit design/layout.
    • Construction and testing.
    • Programming.
  • Communicating research results to clients and the scientific community through oral and written reports.

Location: Sydney (Lindfield) NSW
Salary: AU$115k – AU$135k (pro-rata for part-time) plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience in a relevant field such as electronics engineering.
  • Significant experience with analogue electronics.
  • To be familiar with inter-chip communication protocols (e.g. I2C, SPI, etc.) and have an understanding of data logging and graphical data reporting.
  • Be able to use schematic capture and PC board layout software (Altium Designer preferred).
  • Experience and proficiency in programming, data manipulation, and data visualization using languages such as Python or MATLAB, ANSI-C and C++.
  • Excellent communication skills with a strong client focus, and a history of successful relations across a range of stakeholder groups.
  • The ability to work effectively both individually and as a member of a high-functioning technical team with members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify original, creative and innovative solutions by generating and pursuing novel ideas to problems.
