The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is Australia’s largest scientific research organisation and one of the largest and most diverse scientific organisations in the world. 

The Scientific Computing (SC) group within the Information Management & Technology function provides end-to-end infrastructure ranging from corporate IT systems through to leading edge high performance data processing tools and platforms. The teams manage over 60PB of data at a compounded annual growth rate of ~75%, and a proportionate computational and network fabric including several Top500 supercomputers, HPC and a highly versatile and robust corporate hosting platform. 

This is an opportunity to work in a professional and technically challenging environment, supporting a diverse range of applications and infrastructure, to further CSIRO’s computational science.

Your duties will include:

  • Liaise with clients to determine their needs and take personal responsibility for their satisfaction and correct problems promptly and in a constructive manner.
  • Collaborate with other teams to design, implement, deliver and maintain a Kubernetes platform for a range of scientific applications and workflows that will be run on internal and cloud resources.
  • Delivering and integrating on-prem and public cloud systems to support scientific workflows, including platforms such as Kubernetes, HPC, high performance data storage, data visualisation workstations and public cloud.
  • Contribute to the implementation and maintenance of a container based scientific application environment for applications such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, e.g. Jupyter
  • Contribute to the development of best practice guides and policies, such as application workload management, quota management and cyber security.
  • Contribute to service management processes, including change management, configuration management and incident management.

Location: CSIRO sites AU wide: Melbourne VIC; Sydney NSW; Brisbane QLD; Adelaide SA; Canberra ACT; Perth WA
Salary: AU $102,724 to $111,165 + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

Pre-requisite:

  • Education or experience in Science, Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology or other relevant field.

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience in creating and managing containers for scientific applications and workflows.
  • Experience in managing a computing environment for machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence, such as Jupyter notebooks and relevant Python packages.
  • Experience in deploying and supporting scientific applications on computing systems such as HPC and Kubernetes.
  • Experience in high level languages such as Python, shell script and Go.
  • Strong problem solving, analytical and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with independence and self-motivation within a distributed team environment.
