The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Engineering?
  • Contribute to the development of practical applications of radio pulsars
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s leading scientific research organisation!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

The purpose of this project is to develop practical applications of radio pulsars.  Pulsars are themselves extreme objects and they are used for astrophysical purposes such as searching for gravitational waves, studying the interstellar medium and testing theories of gravity.

The successful candidate will develop practical applications of pulsars that may be related to navigation, positioning and timing, solar system studies, random number generation and cryptography, time synchronisation, atomic clocks or other similar applications. During this work you will have the opportunity to continue your own research with the cutting-edge instrumentation available at CSIRO.

Your duties will include:

  • Carrying out innovative research of importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific and/or technical outcomes in collaboration with senior research scientists and engineers in CSIRO Space & Astronomy and Data61.
  • Enhancing and supporting the Australia Telescope National Facility.
  • Carrying out research investigations requiring originality, creativity and innovation.
  • Recording, managing, and analysing data/information using relevant domain data science techniques.
  • Proactively undertaking development to grow effective researcher capabilities to support career goals.
