The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD applied mathematics, network science, behavioural economics, epidemiology, data science, behavioural sciences, or similar?
  • Contribute to the James Cook University-CSIRO Research Programme on Emerging Infectious Diseases
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s leading scientific research organisation!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

Human behaviour, at the individual and collective levels, plays a crucial role in disease transmission. This has recently been demonstrated as vaccine uptake (or hesitancy), mask wearing, and physical distancing have all had significant impacts on the spread of SARS-CoV-2. An improved understanding of these behaviours, and their interactions with disease dynamics, is therefore necessary to support more realistic models to guide public health decision-making.

The successful candidate will integrate transmission modelling, behavioural sciences, and economics theory to maximise the utility for informing the potential impacts and trade-offs of various policies. This project forms part of the broader James Cook University-CSIRO Research Programme on Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Your duties will include:

  • Developing methods to study complex dynamics of behaviours affecting behaviours, behaviours affecting outbreaks, and outbreaks affecting behaviours.
  • Shaping the frameworks and thinking of this emerging area of highly translational research, integrating the two major fields of behavioural sciences and infectious diseases modelling.
  • Collaborating across disciplines (applied biological mathematics, network science, computer science, epidemiology, behavioural sciences, behavioural economics, anthropology) and organisations (CSIRO and JCU).
  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.

Location: Townsville, QLD
Salary: AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years
Reference: 86823

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as applied mathematics, network science, computer science, behavioural economics, epidemiology, data science, behavioural sciences, anthropology, or other infectious diseases disciplines. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Quantitative skills, including modelling and simulation, and cleaning and analysing data.
  • Demonstrated scientific computing experience.
  • Experience working collaboratively in interdisciplinary groups.
  • Training or experience in behavioural sciences or economics is highly regarded.
