The Department of Defence is seeking to fill the Senior Executive Service Band 1 position of the Assistant Secretary Information Communications and Technology Security in the Chief Information Officer Group. The position may be based in Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane or Adelaide.

The Chief Information Officer Group is responsible for ensuring that Defence has a dependable, secure and integrated Defence Information Environment to support Defence business and military operations.

As the Assistant Secretary Information Communications and Technology Security, you will be responsible for:

  • Controlling, shaping and influencing ICT Security management systems and resources within the Group and across Defence
  • Provide strategic oversight of all ICT security-related activities within the Defence Single Information Environment and influence the broader ICT environment
  • Determine ICT security risks and develop strategies to mitigate them; be the IT security advisor for Defence, as mandated in Government policy.

You will need to have extensive knowledge of ICT security and ICT management, in order to be able to exercise appropriate decision-making authority and effective influencing skills at all levels across CIOG and Defence. A strategic understanding of the organisation's role is required to be able to make sound decisions and develop strategies that mitigate ICT security risk in balance with the need for business and operational outcomes. You will have strong verbal communication skills, and an ability to communicate highly technical information to non-technical Defence executives.

The remuneration package includes superannuation, an Executive Vehicle allowance and, where applicable, relocation expenses. The salary component for this position may be negotiated with the successful candidate within the Defence Senior Executive Service Band 1 salary range.

Engagement may be negotiated on an ongoing basis or for a specified term. To be eligible for ongoing appointment, an applicant must be, or intend to become, a permanent Australian citizen. This position is a security-designated position. The successful applicant will be required to undergo a security assessment to the appropriate level.
