The Role

The HYDRO and METOC ICT Services APS6 position is the single point of contact in the Maritime Geospatial Warfare Unit, a recently formed unit of approximately 50 people.  The position will support a range of ICT roles across fixed and deployable systems both ashore and also to eight deployable teams. They will ensure deployable systems are equipped to support mission tasks, with tested software interoperability and also ensure these meet Defence security requirements. Additional role is development of tools and new processes to enhance the effectiveness of deployed team’s geospatial products, and to sustainably manage the transition of new software or tools into existing systems. This position will be lead in interacting with contractors to in-service computer equipment and systems as well as higher headquarters staff and other areas of Defence. The successful candidate will work closely with the Executive Officer in implementing Unit Cyber Security, and with the Heads of Department HYDRO and METOC in delivery of services and systems. The position must be able to obtain and maintain an NV1 clearance.

About the Team

The position provides continuity of ICT knowledge in the Maritime Geospatial Warfare Unit and specialist skills and knowledge not commonly held by the uniformed members of the unit.  The position will interact with other groups across Defence, contractors, and CIOG to deliver deployable capability of HYDRO and METOC services, and manage all non-contracted ICT systems for the unit.  This includes managing software lists, imaging and re-imaging systems, providing advice on set-up of new software and systems as they are delivered into service. The position will also assist in the development of new processes and products, and their specialist ICT skills will assist turning the subject matter expertise of the rest of the unit into products and services.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has recent experience with Visual Weather Service and METOC applications of ArcGIS, broad knowledge of networked systems, will create new workflows and products to meet end user requirements, maintains highly organised tracking of systems, software and services and is proactive in identifying and resolving ICT issues as teams are preparing to deploy, and while deployed for periods two weeks to six months. They have existing knowledge of Australian and Defence networks, and previous/current Defence experience. The position is at HMAS PENGUIN but will require infrequent travel to other Defence sites.
