Your Role

We are seeking talented computer scientists to join a rapidly growing team of researchers and software engineers who conduct research and development on cutting edge cloud-based applications and architectures in support of Defence. You will have the opportunity to develop prototypes in support of military exercises and operations, providing real and immediate impact and influence.
 
To be successful, you will require a background in one, or more, of the following disciplines: software development, microservice architectures, DevSecOps, cloud-computing, infrastructure automation, cloud-native computing, web development.
 
You will work closely with senior developers and researchers in a team within an environment which provides strong mentoring to fast track the development of your skills.
 
You will have a natural curiosity to explore cutting edge technology and work on interesting technical problems in a high-impact environment. You will have a desire for innovation, transforming concepts into capabilities for Defence.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate is an enthusiastic and resourceful computer scientist, preferably with post-graduate qualifications, who has an interest in development within a modernised technology stack and exploring the latest technologies.
 
 You will have demonstrated skills in, more than one of the following:

  • software development, preferably in Java or Python
  • web technologies such as javascript frameworks, Angular or React
  • working within contemporary cloud environments, such as Azure or AWS
  • development of applications using microservice architectures
  • containerisation and container orchestration platforms, such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • DevSecOps pipeline development

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working within a dynamic environment with continually evolving requirements. You will be able to operate in a fast-paced environment, with high impact and high reward and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Our Team

Joint Warfare and Operations is an analysis branch within Joint & Operations Analysis Division. We have a proud history of supporting ADF operations and leading Defence thinking around command and control (C2) at the operational level. Our mission is to apply relevant research to address the operational challenges presented by Australia’s strategic circumstances. In particular, we enhance warfighting effectiveness through the development of leading-edge C2 systems, decision-making technologies, and concepts and capabilities that support agile warfighting.
 
We are a diverse and rapidly growing team which contains specialists across computer science, data science and software engineering. We actively foster a culture of collaboration, scientific exploration, experimentation and continuous improvement. We embrace agile and lean innovation methodologies and emphasises technical exploration of emerging technology. Historically we have provided decision support prototypes to warfighters, most recently through Operation Bushfire Assist and Operation Covid-19 Assist.
