The Role
DST Group has an Electronic Engineer position available within Research Engineering (RE), and advanced engineering branch of Research Services Division that is responsible for the development of bespoke electronic engineering products in support of Defence Research. The work undertaken is highly varied across application domains including land, sea, air, space, and national security. Reporting to the Discipline Leader Electronics and Software Engineering, the successful candidate will under limited guidance complex undertake electronic and software design, analysis, simulation, and review tasks and activities. The tasks will involve the appropriate application of established principles in order to maintain professional engineering standards.

The successful candidate will be involved in the development of electronic, software, and embedded systems, from initial concept through to in-service use. The candidate will be required to demonstrate initiative and the capability for innovative thought as applied to design work, and be capable of working both in a team and individual setting.

Position Duties:

  • Perform complex work under limited direction from supervisor and work to agreed priorities and outcomes.
  • Ensure accurate completion of work and to contribute to publication of new applications.
  • Apply standard techniques within a framework of established principles, practices and procedures across a range of fields.
  • Utilise standard electronic engineering methodologies and demonstrate an ability to perform work in a number of environments.
  • Build, motivate and sustain positive relationships with team members and actively participate in team work and group activities.
  • Disseminate results obtained through analysis and experimentation.
  • Recommend solutions to issues impacting on the achievement of desired outcomes.
  • Employ knowledge, principles and techniques from a range of sources to progress work.
  • Participate in field trials and on military platforms to contribute to the work of the team.
  • Demonstrate an ability to perform scientific and technical work in a number of environments.
  • Adapt to change and is willing to broaden skills outside formal training.

Research Services Division (RSD) delivers specialist capabilities to the Defence Innovation Science and Technology (IS&T). RSD comprises a professional workforce of highly specialised engineers, technicians, computational scientists and other professional staff who provide a wide range of highly specialised and unique research capability and innovative solutions which provide the advanced research platforms for defence, national security and the wider defence IS&T ecosystem. RSD capabilities accelerate and protect Defence’s science and technology advances and promote a collaborative, compliant, safe and healthy workplace.

RSD’s work areas include:

  • Emerging digital science capabilities, including computational and data intensive science, research data and information and laboratory and experimental systems
  • Scientific computing including the development and acquisition of a world-class secure High Performance Computing (HPC) capability for advanced modelling and simulation
  • Nationally recognised, unique and novel research engineering capabilities
  • Development and implementation of the Outstanding Research Infrastructure Powering Innovation pillar, a major component of the More Together: Defence Science and Technology Strategy 2030
  • Defence innovation, science and technology compliance, assurance, and sovereignty through complex research safety, research security and scientific resource management.
  • RSD also provides specialised research enabling capabilities to other groups and services within Defence, the Australian Intelligence community, our allies and/or our partners in industry and academia.

Research Engineering (RE) branch provides integrated, multi-disciplined, leading edge, rapid response and innovative scientific engineering capability to the Defence S&T program. RE is dedicated to collaborating closely with DSTG researchers while providing valuable support to Defence and National Security operations and provides capabilities across six functional areas: Electronic and Software Engineering; Electronic Fabrication; Micro and Nano Engineering; Mechanical Fabrication; Mechanical Engineering; and Scientific Applied Imaging. Certified to the IOS9001 Quality Management System, RE provides consistent fit for purpose engineering solutions and the application of best business practices.

Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is genuinely interested in the opportunity provided development of novel electronic and electro-mechanical designs and systems across a wide range of domains. They will have an interest in producing high quality work, and seek to continually improve and broaden their skills.

Our ideal candidate will be willing to work both independently or within a design team, and will be adaptable to changing requirements that occur within a research environment. The will have good communications skills, both written and verbal.
