The additive manufacturing capability will be developed in partnership with DSTG subject matter experts in order to satisfy the needs of the DSTG wider research program in advanced functional materials and rapid proto-typing.

The SME is required to develop mechatronic and software solutions enabling research activities utilising DSTG’s multi-material 3D printing capability and the use of traditional robotics and advanced Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machining for rapid prototyping. The SME will be involved with the development of bespoke multi-material and 3D printing strategies and hardware for use on various CNC and robotic platforms. The SME will be responsible for the operation of several multi-material and 3D printing technologies to support the collective needs of the Science and Technology (S&T) program.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of mechatronic hardware systems and software strategies enabling research activities supporting the DSTG multi-material and additive manufacturing research program.
  • Liaise with DSTG subject matter experts in order to understand the key research requirements in multi-material and additive manufacturing and associated hardware/software required to support the associated research activities.
  • Operation and maintenance of the onsite multi-material and additive manufacturing capabilities, from both an equipment and software perspective.
  • Responsible for knowledge sharing in the Additive Manufacturing domain with DSTG staff and partners including sharing advances in hardware interfacing and programming.
  • Manage the delivery of additive manufacturing outputs to DSTG/Defence stakeholders utilising onsite additive manufacturing capabilities.
  • Coordinate reach back to other national sites as required to ensure additive manufacturing services are provided in a timely manner.
  • Work with integrated teams to support multidisciplinary projects with mechatronic engineering contribution.
  • Develop strong positive relationships with the DSTG client base and the Engineering Support Services Contractor, and promote capabilities to support the Defence S&T program.
  • Work with the MIAE to develop strong external relationships and leverage academia, external agencies and industry to deliver S&T outcomes.
