Your Role:

The Group Leader Undersea Environment and System Exploitation (UESE) will be responsible for providing effective leadership of a multidisciplinary team undertaking S&T relating to the ocean environment, as well as modelling, simulation and analysis of military sonar systems. You will have a national or international reputation in a relevant field of Science and Technology (S&T), and considerable experience, awareness and knowledge across a range of S&T applied to Defence. As the Group Leader you will:

  • Lead, nurture and inspire staff in the research of Undersea Environment and System Exploitation in the Maritime Domain.
  • Provide the vision, guidance, direction, coordination and collaboration necessary to ensure the Science and Technology Capability can be harnessed for the delivery of agreed outputs to Defence.
  • Have a sound understanding of Defence client priorities and requirements, and lead the achievement of outcomes to meet their needs.
  • Develop and enhance international and domestic relationships and collaborative programs to advance Defence capability objectives.
  • Be accountable for the development and sustainment of quality S&T, including complex infrastructure.

Our Team

Undersea Environment and System Exploitation (UESE) is part of the Maritime Division and is within the Sonar Technology and Systems Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC).  The MSTC covers a range of S&T areas from the undersea environment to new sensor technologies to the analysis of performance of in-service military sonar systems.  We explore S&T opportunities to enhance Defence Capability for the current and future fleet.

The Undersea Environment and System Exploitation Science and Technology Capability (STC) aims to increase Defence capability through improved employment of sonar sensors, awareness of platform signature effects, and exploitation of ocean environmental knowledge for operational advantage. We develop techniques to predict, measure, and characterise the undersea environment, and physics-based models to characterise the impact of the environment on sonar sensor systems. We apply this knowledge to assess the performance of military sonar systems and develop concepts to improve sonar effectiveness and tactics.

Our Ideal Candidate:

You will be recognised as a leader in a specific Science Technology Capability (STC) area of science & technology relevant to Defence, and ideally will have a broad background applicable to all areas of the Undersea Environment and System Exploitation (UESE) STC.

As an excellent collaborator, you will develop productive partnerships, work collaboratively across Defence and manage strategic relationships with key stakeholders. You are someone who consults widely, shares information and drives knowledge transfer with a network of stakeholders internally and externally. You are passionate about actively creating opportunities to transition science and technology into Defence business objectives. As a builder of effective transdisciplinary teams, you use an agile, outcome focussed approach to program execution. You will have proven ability to manage increasing and highly complex workloads within an integrated workforce.
