The Role
Group Leader Influence and Conflict Analysis (ICA) will provide scientific leadership to the ICA Group. The Group is composed of psychologists, sociologists, political scientists and systems scientists working on a balance of applied activities and more foundational strategic research.

The Group Leader will be responsible for the development of people and delivery of applied research programs designed to shape Defence and whole-of-government thinking about how to build and exercise influence.

Specifically the Group Leader will lead research on:

• Influence effects on operations;
• Countering malign influence; and
• New information warfare and influence concepts and capabilities.

They will lead the Modelling Grey Zone (MGZ) project as well as significant contributions to DSTG’s national security program and Information Warfare STaR Shot.

They will develop and maintain a large set of client, stakeholder and partner relationships that include significant linkages with academia and international partners.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a 'Positive Vetting' security clearance however may commence on a minimum Negative Vetting Level 2 security clearance.

About our Team
The ICA Group is one of four research units within the Joint Warfare and Operations (JWO) Branch of DSTG’s Joint & Operations Analysis Division (JOAD). JWO has a proud history of supporting ADF operations, assisting Special Forces and leading Defence thinking around command and control (C2) at the operational level. The JWO mission is to apply relevant research to address the operational challenges presented by Australia’s strategic circumstances.

In particular, JWO seeks to mitigate operational risk and enhance warfighting effectiveness through its four integrated research themes focused on understanding the grey zone; warfighter decision support; human-machine partnerships and future command and control. The Branch leads DST’s S&T effort in support of the operational community and is central to the delivery of DSTG’s Information Warfare and Agile C2 STaR Shots.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will have:

• A strong research background in a social, behavioral, political or systems science.
• Extensive experience supporting the ADF operational community and a proven track record of research and analysis that supports strategic situation awareness and operational decision making around influence effects.
• Superb communication skills with a track record of engaging and influencing a large range of partners and stakeholders at all levels.
• Natural leadership with the ability to attract, develop, empower and lead a diverse Group of researchers whilst building relationships with a wide variety of partners, clients and stakeholders.
• A strategic mindset with the ability to understand and distil Defence and whole-of-government strategy and inspire a sense of purpose and direction within the Group by aligning the work program with wider strategic priorities.
• Demonstrated self-awareness, resilience, integrity and a strong commitment to Defence’s Values, Behaviours, Diversity and Inclusion principles.
