The Role
The Directorate Navy Engineering is looking to fill 5 key roles as follows:

  • EL1 Command and Control Systems Engineer
  • EL1 Fleet Information Environment Systems Engineer
  • EL1 Emanation Security Supervisor
  • APS6 Optronic Systems Engineer
  • APS6 Emanation Security Technical Officer

The Directorate Navy Engineering (DNE) is seeking engineers and technologists experienced in the field of electrical/electronic/mechatronics/communications to undertake engineering work in the area of Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Electronic Warfare (C5ISREW) technologies to support acquisition and sustainment of submarines, combatant and support ships for the Royal Australian Navy. These positions are Navy’s specialist engineers providing independent assurance that support new acquisition projects and fleet in being.  

The roles will support the areas of deployed Command and Control, ICT networks, Emanation Security, tactical communications, Command Support, CCTV and Optronic (daylight electro-optical and infrared targeting and surveillance) and Laser (rangefinder, designator and warning) systems that deliver maritime capability in the naval context and include the following activities: 

  • Materiel assurance, supporting  certifications and accreditations, witnessing test and trials and equipment installs and the provision of risk assessments to assure technical seaworthiness.
  • Supervision and conduct of novel and complex engineering analysis using live or test systems. 
  • Provision of specialist advice to assist in the development of function and performance specifications (FPS) and interface standards.
  • Build enduring relationships, technical mastery and educate the naval engineering community.

About our Team
The Data Networks Cell provides Subject Matter Expertise on a range of capabilities that includes Navy Command Control and Communications including Tactical Data Links, the deployed Fleet Information Environment, management of certification activities and the provision of training to support the Australian Defence Force (ADF) EMSEC capability

The Sensors, Optronics and Laser Cell supports Navy through the provision of engineering support and advice on Navy Optronic systems and the provision of formal advice on laser safety to a broad range of customers and stakeholders.

The Cells support Director General Navy Engineering and have a range of highly skilled engineers to provide expertise and advice on a range of deployed network capabilities in support of Navy and projects involved in the design and upgrading of systems within the fleet and during international exercises in order to ensure a secure and robust Defence Information Environment at sea.

As Navy’s engineering centre of expertise these positions will provide the successful candidate a unique ability to contribute to the Royal Australian Navy by being involved in providing advice on and supporting the Engineering capability within the fleet.

Navy Engineering is looking for people who are self-motivated, have a wide range of skills, and are willing to get involved and contribute while supporting projects in a positive way. There is a wide range of tasks that need to manage from short notice high pressure activities to support deployments to the longer term support of projects that are in the process of defining requirements of systems to be utilised into the future.

Becoming a Subject Matter Expert requires strong engineering, communications and negotiation skills or the desire to obtain them and be willing to employ those skills to test a range of possibilities and provide recommendations on the preferred option.
