The Role
The Systems Science and Engineering Specialist (SSES) conducts research and development in the fields of systems science and systems engineering for the benefit of Australian Defence and National Security. Applying considerable knowledge and skills, you will utilise advanced tools and techniques in support of decision-making and the achievement of outcomes.

You will be a leading researcher and practitioner, through innovation and collaboration with defence colleagues, industry and academia. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team that supports the decision-making of the Strategic Centre of Defence and National Security Agencies, conducting research and analysis of military, defence and cross-government organisations as technical and socio-technical systems

Some of the duties of this role include:

  • research, development and application of techniques and tools that support force-level military systems design, integration and analysis
  • liaise and collaborate with military and defence personnel on problem definition, data elicitation and evaluation
  • lead and contribute to multi-disciplinary teams on projects that deliver rigorous and relevant analytical outcomes in a timely manner
  • support to strategic-level decision-making regarding conceptual design, capability development and acquisition of defence force systems
  • timely delivery and clear reporting of analysis and scientific results in the form of documents and briefings

About the Team
The Strategy, Systems and Synthesis (3S) Science & Technology Capability (STC) is a team that develops and applies advanced systematic and systemic methods in support of strategic-level analysis, design and decision-making in the Defence and National Security domains. This encompasses activities such as strategy development, strategic planning and resource allocation, whole-of-force design and integration, military campaign analysis, exploration of future defence contexts, and design and development of joint force concepts. The scientific disciplines and specialties that underpin the 3S STC include: Strategic Analysis, Systems Science & Engineering, Judgement-Based Operations Analysis, Joint Experimentation & Wargaming, Strategic Risk and Joint Concepts & Futures.

The 3S STC is a component of the Strategy and Joint Force (SJF) Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC) that supports whole-of-government, defence strategic and joint force decision-making with respect to emerging technologies, future operations and force design. The SJF MSTC is a branch of the Joint and Operations Analysis Division (JOAD), which houses the majority of the operations analysis and force-level systems design capability of the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG).

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will have experience in operations analysis, systems science or systems engineering. You will have expertise and skills in the design, architecting and analysis of technical or socio-technical systems with a strong desire to apply systems modelling approaches to achieve practical outcomes, with demonstrated skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Systems engineering, analysis and solution design (covering information, enterprise or infrastructure)
  • Requirements analysis, capability development and operations management
  • Modelling of systems Previous experience in the following areas would be desirable but are not necessary:
    • Standards in communication systems
    • Defence Test & Evaluation 

A successful candidate for this position will have the following competencies:

  • Think strategically and conceptually, with the ability to structure, analyse and solve complex problems
  • Scope problems, identify objectives, and devise, manage and execute work programs that deliver outcomes
  • Conduct research and development that develops into innovative approaches and methods
  • Work independently, and also as a member of multi-disciplinary teams, often across organisational boundaries
  • Communicate clearly, succinctly and with influence, in both written and spoken forms
