The Role

In this role you will provide the vision, guidance and direction to harness the ability of your team, enhance Australian Defence Force (ADF) capability and deliver agreed outputs to Defence. You will lead a science team which enhances and supports planning and preparation for, and employment of the integrated forces in current and future operations and enable the ADF to achieve a capability edge in decision making at the strategic and operational level.

Using your experience, awareness and knowledge across a broad range of science, you will provide expert, impartial and timely advice which will impact current and future ADF capabilities. This is a diverse team which includes the following:

  • Research into digital transformation of C2 information systems, modernising technology to enhance agility of operational Headquarters
  • Social and behavioural sciences research to shape Defence thinking about influence operations, effect, concepts and capabilities
  • Advanced analytics for machine-enabled planning and decision making
  • Operations analysis and research into socio-technical systems to inform headquarters and warfighter decision making

You will develop an understanding of ADF priorities and select the best scientific methods and solutions to meet their needs. Your team will provide support to Headquarters Joint Operations Command and subordinate commands, Special Operations Command, and across the Joint community. You will also maintain connections and collaborate with relevant and complementary teams across DSTG.

You will be a recognised international authority and will have the ability to apply and develop innovative techniques to enhance Defence’s capability, have knowledge relating to the methodology, systems and procedures within the scientific field and have the ability to translate this into strategy.
