The Role

A world-class High Performance Computing (HPC) Centre is being established by Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) to help solve complex real-world Defence problems and support innovative advanced Defence research.

The HPC Digital Science Facilitation Manager is responsible for providing support across the Computational Data Intensive Sciences (CDIS) portfolio for facilitating the timely completion of activities and accelerating research outcomes.

The role employs extensive knowledge of Science and Technology (S&T) principles to manage all incoming CDIS support requests, providing project management expertise to assist the team to deliver complex multi-disciplinary and innovative solutions for a wide range of Defence S&T and research activities. The successful applicant will work with a large degree of autonomy and apply extensive working knowledge of highly complex scientific computing environments and research workflows to effectively and efficiently manage access to resources performing research in support of divisional research projects.

Position Duties:

  • Ensure all support requests are attended to in a timely manner. This includes applying in-depth S&T knowledge to understand client requirements, identifying, analysing and sequencing capabilities to deliver a solution, and assigning projects or activities to team members in consultation with the relevant team leads.
  • Develop and execute activity and resource planning and scheduling to ensure availability of resources and capability when required by Defence research projects. This includes monitoring progress, managing support capacity and backlog, and using defined protocols and considerable judgement to escalate requests and adapt to changes brought about by varying priorities and resources. Collaborate with stakeholders to identify, analyse and manage capability/capacity risks to DSTG research.
  • Design, develop, maintain and report on various project related documents representing all CDIS activities. These include: detailed work schedule and work breakdown structure using APOLLO, budget spreadsheets, and monthly summary reports for performance metrics such as project schedule status and financial performance to agreed budgets/plans. This extends to include the preparation of draft agreements/contracts with academia, industry, and other research agencies in Australia or overseas.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines and leaders to ensure that the integrated CDIS capability supports the delivery of agreed outputs to Defence.
  • Understand and be responsive to a wide variety of specialised DSTG divisional research computing needs. In particular, those requiring advanced computational science solutions and infrastructure.

About our Team

Research Services Division (RSD) delivers a wide range of highly specialised and unique research capabilities, and comprises a professional workforce of highly specialised engineers, technicians, computational scientists and other professional staff. These innovative solutions provide the advanced research platforms for defence, national security and the wider defence IS&T ecosystem, and accelerate and protect Defence’s science and technology advances.

Computational and Data Intensive Sciences (CDIS) conducts research and innovates where Science and Technology (S&T) converges with computing infrastructure to deliver increased research productivity and enabling new science discovery for Defence researchers.

This encompasses DSTG's HPC and cloud platforms and multi-disciplinary S&T areas like workflow and data optimisation (including machine learning), data visualisation, and computer system benchmarking and code optimisation; and provides expert S&T advice in those areas. With a strong emphasis on security that is critical to Defence, it extends to include research SecDevOps which delivers secure computational environments optimised for research workflows, with ready-to-use common computational S&T tools, trusted code repositories, and container support.
