This exciting role involves inspiring a small team of scientists, engineers and technologists to contribute to development of science and technology in the field of Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR) mission protection.

The ideal applicant will have sound experience in system level analysis, ISR sensor systems, networked sensor systems or vulnerability assessment and protection, as well as, a passion for working collaboratively with others. In this role you will contribute to a culture of innovation that drives our More Together: Defence Science and Technology Strategy.

As the Science & Technology ISR Team Lead, you will lead a team responsible for ISR Mission Level Protection.  This will require you to:

  • Lead a research program involving:
    • system level analysis and vulnerability assessment of ISR systems
    • development of innovative solutions for the protection of ISR missions
  • Lead the development of an operational demonstrator to facilitate the transition of protection solutions into operational systems.
  • Supervise and mentor staff to promote a healthy culture that values staff, innovation and excellence in science.
  • Manage allocated resources, set work area priorities, manage workflows, develop strategies and evaluate business outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with industry, academia and other research agencies.
  • Report research findings to Defence partners and the scientific community through high quality scientific reports, briefs, publications and presentations.

A merit pool will be created from the list of suitable applicants which may be used to fill future positions in the event a position becomes vacant within the 12 months from gazettal date of this position.

About our Team
Intelligence, Surveillance and Space Division (ISSD) undertakes internationally-recognised research and development into technologies aimed at enhancing national capability for Defence and national agency decision makers.

The role is within ISR Protection group, within Integrated ISR branch in ISSD.

ISR Protection group enhances ISR system resilience by developing techniques to improve ISR system performance and efficiency in adverse environments through advanced processing and automation. This includes electronic protection against natural or deliberate interference, and passive sensing to characterise adversary ISR capabilities. It also addresses the protection of ISR mission objectives and capabilities through counter surveillance, denial and deception techniques. Systems level analysis and assessment is used to quantify the effect on ISR mission capability.
