The Role
Under broad direction you will:

  • Guide and develop subsurface systems research in areas such as systems integration, performance assessments, modelling and simulation, technology evaluations.
  • Initiate, develop and sustain a network of internal and external research partners across academia, industry and Government.
  • Manage stakeholder relationships, guide the development of initiatives including the provision of scientific research and development advice, to support Defence decision making in relation to the acquisition of new naval platforms, as well as platform capability upgrades.
  • Understand new knowledge related to submarine and undersea deployed system performance and apply it to produce enhanced capability for Defence.
  • Deliver high quality scientific reporting including briefs, publications and presentations.
  • Facilitate appropriate direction for the team by clearly communicating goals, promoting a strong culture of scientific and technical excellence.
  • Assess the future, anticipate priorities and develop long-term plans for this discipline.
  • Manage allocated resources, set work area priorities, workflows, develop strategies and evaluate business outcomes.

The Naval Architecture and Platform System Analysis Group is part of the Maritime Division. The Group guides research and development of advanced tools and methods to assess the whole-of-vessel performance for the Australian Defence Force. We support Defence in design assurance activities and the transitioning of innovative methods to Royal Australian Navy to increase availability, reduce costs and assure seaworthiness. We achieve this by partnering with both international and local organisations to remain at the cutting edge of scientific developments in whole-of-vessel performance including: seakeeping; multi-vessel interactions; operational loads; whole-of-vessel performance; structural response; integrated model based systems exploration and design trade-off studies.

You are able to identify relevant stakeholders’ expectations and concerns and engage with them to achieve desirable outcomes for Defence. You can provide advice and assistance on the method of task completion to team members. To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Experience building and guiding transdisciplinary teams in a discipline relevant to this position.
  • A strong working knowledge of systems engineering relevant to submarine and deployed subsurface platforms.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in developing and applying system models, including model calibration, validation and verification, and generation of research products.
  • Experience in contemporary software engineering within teams for quality management.
  • Familiarity in using Modelica, Matlab, Python, or similar programming language for modelling and data processing.
