Directed Energy Weapons Operations Analyst – Operations Research, Engineering, Physics

Executive Level 1 (S&T Level 5)

$106,074 - $119,651 (plus Super)
Fairbairn - ACT

The Role
You will have a passion for new technologies and a strong interest in working with deep technology experts to determine how new technologies are best applied to safeguard Australia and its interests. Directed energy weapons, including high-energy lasers and high-powered radio frequency, are designed to cause damage or localized disruption by delivering electromagnetic energy to the target. Advances in directed energy capability are expected to accelerate over the next decade.

To ensure the ADF can both leverage and defend against such weapons, you will bring your considerable experience in (at least one of) operations research, engineering or physics to this new and exciting role, carry out best practice analysis and provide robust advice to Defence future planning. You will also have the opportunity to provide input into the future direction of the multi-domain simulation analysis work program.

About our Team
The Multi-Domain Simulation and Analysis discipline within Joint and Operations Analysis Division advances the simulation and analysis capability of Defence, with emphasis on the joint Force – Army, Navy Air Force working together across all physical and information domains. The team undertakes research in complex whole-of-force simulations using tools such as the Advanced Framework for Simulation (AFSIM) developed by the US Air Force Research Labs. The team comprises of researchers with engineering, computer science, applied maths and applied science backgrounds.

The discipline is a small team comprising a manager, a lead analyst and two analysts who focus on leveraging simulation to generate evidence to support decisions on force options and consideration of multi-domain concepts. The team also engages in future focused strategic research. Our support to the Disruptive Weapons Effect (DWE) STaR Shot has involved developing simulations to determine the effectiveness of future technologies and capabilities.

Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in simulation modelling, operations research, physics and/or applied statistics. Knowledge of directed energy technologies and concepts, and experience in applying statistical and algorithmic techniques for options testing, sensitivity (factor) analysis and optimisation would be advantageous.

Expertise in inferential statistics to support hypothesis testing and ability to apply experimental design concepts to simulation experiments is highly desirable. Prior experience in designing, facilitating and output analysis of seminar wargaming and experimentation activities would be beneficial.

As an S&T5, the lead analyst is expected to work collaboratively to shape and deliver work on time. The successful candidate will publish research to advance the discipline’s analytical capability.

The candidate should possess some or all of the following skills:

  • Ability to design simulation experiments.
  • Mastery of analytical tools and statistical expertise to carry out simulation studies.
  • Awareness of innovations in constructive simulation techniques.

Application Closing Date: Sunday 26 June, 2022
