The Role

The Insider Threat and Investigative Support Directorate, under the Defence Chief Information Security Officer, is looking for an EL1 Information Security Specialists to lead our Insider Threat Intelligence section. 

The Assistant Director for Insider Threat Intelligence will lead a team of security specialists and/or incident responders in case reviews, deep dive activities, and targeted response work. This would result in identifying the presence of potential strategic insider threat concerns, and mitigate threats to Defence in support of warfighting preparedness and support capabilities.

In addition to EL1 administrative duties they are responsible for:

  • Triaging and statistical reviews of alerts and case history to review and report enacted cyber threat vectors from monitoring and identification of malicious or risky behaviours on ICT systems.
  • Complex problem solving and coordination activities, enabling detailed, time sensitive work in support of operational and strategic outcomes.
  • Multifaceted stakeholder engagements across agencies to maintain relations and technical competency within a high performing team in an operational environment.

The additional payment is a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP) which enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the rate of salary otherwise payable under the Enterprise Agreement (EA) to some or all of the jobs within a critical occupation(s) or discipline within a workplace. 

Applicants engaged into a BDCP position must consider the following. BDCPs provide remuneration in addition to the Defence Enterprise Agreement (EA). This arrangement is subject to meeting eligibility criteria and is subject to annual review. Should your performance fall beyond requirements or the eligibility criteria not be met, your eligibility for the BDCP may be reviewed and ceased. It may also be ceased should you change positions or the requirement for the BDCP is no longer necessary, as determined by Defence. Should the BDCP be ceased you will be advised and your BDCP additional payment will cease.

About our Team
The Directorate of Insider Threat and Investigative Support (ITIS) is a highly skilled team of ICT Security Specialists whose focus is the proactive detection and timely response to insider threats and behavioural driven cyber security concerns within the Defence Enterprise portfolio. ITIS provide threat investigation support services across the Defence portfolio to understand the risk to Defence information from user driven concerns. 

ITIS members have access to field leading information shared across our government partnerships, contemporary tools, commercial and on the job training, and other support mechanisms to enable them to achieve high quality, responsive, and dynamic outcomes for Defence and its customers.

ITIS consists of a diverse workforce of complimentary skillsets and is inclusive of APS, ADF, and contractors. ITIS routinely engages with a wide range of stakeholders across the Department, Whole-of-Government, and Defence Industry, exploring new opportunities for continuous improvement and collaboration.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • A strong analytical background with experience or training with a focus on cyber security and user monitoring.
  • Experience providing subject matter expertise, clear technical direction, and unique advice and assistance on cyber security challenges to stakeholders.
  • Training or experience in, behavioural analysis and/or research activities to meet the current and future information and cyber security needs of stakeholders.
  • Experience providing leading edge and unique advice and assistance on contemporary information and cyber security challenges to stakeholders.
  • Experience managing personnel resources to ensure professional expertise and development opportunities to perform assigned tasks to the standards required.
