The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Senator Stephen Conroy has announced an agreement with NEC Corporation to promote innovation and international excellence which capitalises on the rollout of the National Broadband network (NBN).

In a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government, NEC Corporation will keep the Government informed about its activities, particularly, in the areas of aged care and intelligent transport systems.


Senator Conroy said that NEC brings a wealth of experience in the application of emerging technologies to improve the delivery of products and services, such as broadband Access Systems, advanced robotics for aged care, and road to vehicle communication systems.


He said that greater engagement with the digital economy would assist Australia in delivering aged care in various ways, such as the use of video conferencing and other tools to assist in keeping older people at home for longer. 


In the area of intelligent transport, more streamlined management of traffic flows and other traffic issues would assist reducing the impact of congestion on the natural and built environment.
