The Australia Japan Cable (AJC) telecoms link has been broken for about three months.

The 12,000km telecommunications link was damaged in April, but has allegedly remained in operation.

Chief of the AJC company, David Crofts, has told reporters that repairs are being scheduled, but would give little other info.

“There is one cable break on AJC close to shore at Tanguisson in Guam that was traffic affecting,” Crofts told tech media outlet iTnews.

“Pending receipt of permits to proceed with the repair, that traffic has been internally restored via the other AJC Guam landing using the ring architecture of AJC’s fibre configuration.”

Crofts gave no details on how the break happened and if there has been any reduced performance for customers.

Vocus, the cable’s backbone provider, says repairs are scheduled will start in August this year.

The AJC was built in 2001 with a 25-year lifespan, and has been transferring data at one terabit per second on 100 Gbps wavelength technology since 2014.

AJC says it plans to boost capacity to over 5 Tbps in the future.
