vBlacktown has become the first site in Sydney to switch on to the National Broadband Network (NBN), with 1300 homes and businesses now connected to the super-fast internet service after coming online late last week.

NBN Co's General Manager of External Relations, Trent Williams, said that a further 9300 premises are scheduled to come online in the area over the coming months.

"Families in Blacktown and other areas where the NBN is available are encouraged to contact their preferred phone or internet service provider to see how much they can save by connecting to the NBN,” Mr Williams said.

The rollout of the service in the Western Sydney service comes after the NBN Co announced an updated rollout schedule, with 4.9 million premises now set to be connected to the service by 2016.

“We’re getting on with the job of rolling out the NBN in every state and territory. Our plan is to deliver better broadband to every Australian over the remaining 8 years of this 10-year build,” NBN CO’s CEO Mike Quigley said.
