The National Broadband Network Co (NBN Co) has announced the beginning of major fibre installation works in the country’s capital.

The company announced that the first NBN distribution fibre, linking an exchange at Mitchell to homes in Gungahlin, had arrived on site and is ready for installation.

“Today’s construction activity shows work is underway to provide super fast broadband to homes and businesses in parts of Gungahlin by the end of this year,” NBN Co spokesperson Darren Rudd said.

“The fibre hauling marks another important step in the rollout of the NBN, which is picking up speed in Australia’s capital city.”

Construction on fibre installation has already begun, with fibre-to-the-home services being installed to an estimated 15,000 homes and businesses over the next year, with over 135,000 premises to be connected by mid 2015.
