The Victorian State Government has announced a $15 million injection into emergency service communications technology.

The investment is targeted as upgrading the Metropolitan Mobile Radio (MMR) network to a new band developed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority. The MMR, currently used by Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and Melbourne Fire Brigade, will be upgraded to use the new Ultra High Frequency Land Mobile Radio Band.

The State Government will maintain the current MMR services by funding Motorola to:

  • purchase and install 22 replacement base stations, which form part of the network’s fixed infrastructure that requires replacement under the new spectrum arrangements;
  • purchase and install 13 replacement digital voice repeater systems which form part of the network’s mobile infrastructure that enquires replacement under the new spectrum arrangements; and
  • reprogram and/or upgrade all MMR terminals (portables, mobiles and fixed) and the infrastructures described above, working on approximately 8550 units.
