The Role
Joint System Division (JSD) is seeking highly motivated and skilled Engineers who are able to provide engineering leadership with a record of delivering complex technical and engineering outcomes. As one of the suitable applicants, you will have exceptional stakeholder engagement, excellent verbal and written communication and negotiation skills, and will have a proven history of building, maintaining and growing productive and empowered teams.
 
As an Engineering Professional in JSD you will lead a program of acquisition and sustainment activities that are not only complex systems, but are critical for the Australian Defence Force to equip the Joint Force to meet their operational challenges in to the future. The right people for these roles will show the flexibility to respond to the changing context and shifting priorities of the Defence environment and the agility to realign resourcing to meet new demands. You will be a leader who provides support and guidance to your team to ensure they are sensitive to Defence strategic direction and equipped to excel in their capabilities.

We are seeking candidates with a diverse range of experience and backgrounds in engineering, including people who have gained their experience outside Defence and Government. You will be responsible for exercising assigned engineering authorities and relevant Technical Regulatory Authority delegations. You will possess a demonstrated understanding of the Defence Industry sector in Australia. These are leadership roles in which you will exercise a significant degree of independence. We are looking for a collaborator who will be able to understand the needs of our stakeholders and produce outcomes and results according to their requirements.
 
These positions are linked to a Building Defence Capability Payment, and the successful applicants will receive a 15 percent additional remuneration. The BDCP will be for the life of the current enterprise agreement, and will be reviewed in March 2023.

**The additional payment is a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP) which enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the rate of salary otherwise payable under the Enterprise Agreement (EA) to some or all of the jobs within a critical occupation(s) or discipline within a workplace. Applicants engaged into a BDCP position must consider the following. BDCPs provide remuneration in addition to the Defence Enterprise Agreement (EA). This arrangement is subject to meeting eligibility criteria and is subject to annual review. Should your performance fall beyond requirements or the eligibility criteria not be met, your eligibility for the BDCP may be reviewed and ceased. It may also be ceased should you change positions or the requirement for the BDCP is no longer necessary, as determined by Defence. Should the BDCP be ceased you will be advised and your BDCP additional payment will cease.

About our Team
The Joint Systems Division is responsible for acquiring, integrating and sustaining a range of complex, sophisticated military command and control systems, deployable network systems, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and electronic warfare systems, communications systems and satellites systems that underpin critical Defence capability. The Division manages around 43 major acquisition projects currently underway and sustains a wide range of in-service equipment for Defence and other Government agencies. The Division’s prime and over-riding focus is to provide the best possible support to the Australian Defence Force employing the materiel provided in protecting Australia’s interests. Our people are located in all states and territories across Australia, as well a number of locations internationally.

JSD is seeking applicants who are able to demonstrate initiative and the ability to apply established engineering principles, techniques and methods to solve problems relating to the sustainment, design, development, integration and evaluation of military equipment or other complex military Command, Control, Communication and Computer (C4) and Electronic Warfare (EW) systems.

Key attributes and experience we are looking for:

  • Substantial track record of successful management of engineering projects in the C4 domain using appropriate engineering practices;
  • Ability to manage complex system installations, integration and technical regulatory requirements;
  • Demonstrated focus on timely resolution of issues;
  • A thorough understanding of engineering disciplines;
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams in a complex environment;
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with ability to negotiate and build relationships with stakeholders;
  • Sound commercial and business acumen and a demonstrated understanding of the Defence Industry sector in Australia; and
  • High-level organisational skills, self-drive and initiative with the ability to influence others to achieve tasks and business objectives.
  • A Minimum Negative Vetting 1 security clearance is required, however there may be a requirement to undergo a Negative Vetting 2 or Positive Vetting security clearance. All candidates invited to interview will be required to explain their understanding of the Positive Vetting Security Clearance process
