Satellite Systems Engineer 

$115,899 - $130,733 (EL 1) + Super and 10% BDCP

The Role

SATCOM Ops employs highly motivated, suitably qualified and experienced persons to perform the duties of the Satellite Systems Engineers (SSE). Duties of the SSE includes providing specialist technical support for the operation and management of strategic satellite communication systems including, anchor stations, network systems, satellite systems and satellite communication planning.

The Satellite Systems Engineer (SSE) is expected to operate with limited or broad supervision to ensure essential satellite communication services are provided to Defence, other government agencies, and allies. Each SSE is given responsibility for a share of satellite systems both existing and under development, and is expected to engineer or otherwise provide SME advice on the SATCOM resources required to support Defence’s requirements. The SSE is expected to provide extensive support to major capability acquisition and delivery projects.

The additional payment is a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP) which enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the rate of salary otherwise payable under the Enterprise Agreement (EA) to some or all of the jobs within a critical occupation(s) or discipline within a workplace. 

Applicants engaged into a BDCP position must consider the following. BDCPs provide remuneration in addition to the Defence Enterprise Agreement (EA). This arrangement is subject to meeting eligibility criteria and is subject to annual review. Should your performance fall beyond requirements or the eligibility criteria not be met, your eligibility for the BDCP may be reviewed and ceased. 

It may also be ceased should you change positions or the requirement for the BDCP is no longer necessary, as determined by Defence. Should the BDCP be ceased you will be advised and your BDCP additional payment will cease.

About our Team
ADF Satellite Communications Operations (SATCOM Ops) is responsible for the planning, operation, and defence of all SATCOM missions in support of ADF operations, Raise Train Sustain functions, coalition forces, and whole of government customers. SATCOM Ops engages in mission planning, payload and transmission control operations for sovereign, international and commercially-leased satellite systems.

As a member of the SATCOM Ops team, you will play a key supporting role in the provision and management of satellite communication services for Australian military and government elements around the world. SATCOM Ops is a multi-skilled workforce, and the advertised position provides an opportunity to contribute to the delivery of a strategic Defence function, while broadening your skillset in ICT service delivery.

Our Ideal Candidate
SATCOM Ops is seeking highly-motivated and skilled Senior Engineers with experience in satellite systems including ground, terminal, spacecraft and control segment engineering and planning.

Key skills and experience include:

  • Provide ITIL Tier 3 style support to operational SATCOM systems.
  • Provide specialist technical support to SATCOM projects including assistance to systems engineering, integrated logistics, training development and transition into operational processes
  • Manage and advise on satellite payload operations; ground segment configuration; network support; transponder planning; contract and procurement management; policy and procedural development
  • Able to provide on-going tutelage to SATCOM planners and operators, including APS6 Satellite Systems Specialists
  • Provide integral support and advice to major and minor SATCOM capability acquisition projects
  • Provide specialist advice on SATCOM-related policy-making, procedure and protocol development
