The Ecological Society of Australia (ESA) is a not for profit professional membership organisation that has been promoting and coordinating ecological research across Australia for over 50 years. The Online Media Manager’s primary role is to maintain the ESA’s website and social media accounts, assist with marketing to members through email campaigns, and advise on strategic direction for all ESA’s online media channels.

ONLINE MEDIA MANAGER

CONTEXT:

ESA is the peak body for Ecologists within Australia and is a membership based professional learned Society. An effective Online Media Strategy will enable better and more timely communication with members, but also the capacity to reach a wider cohort allowing ecological networks to grow beyond our direct membership specifically to practitioners, media and policymakers.

ESA currently has accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Linkedin and would like to expand to Instagram. We would like to develop an integrated online strategy that complements our current strategic direction and more effectively allows our members to interact with their Society and each other.

This role:

  • Is a paid casual position, approximately 20 hours/week;
  • Works closely with the Media Working Group, ESA Board, & Executive Officer to manage the Society’s online communications and public outreach;
  • Contributes to the development and delivery of an integrated Online Media Strategy

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

Website Management & Member Communication

  • Ensure ESA website content is updated regularly, and upon request for urgent priorities.
  • Collate content for, manage layout, and distribute the weekly E-newsletter.
  • Prepare and send other email campaigns to members (as directed).
  • Report to the Board monthly on key metrics for eNewsletter, website, and social media; and activities undertaken in that month including any new features/content which has been added to the website.
  • Attend monthly Media Working Group meetings as an active member
  • Liaise with our third party technical developers and oversee development projects when new features and functionality are required on the website.
  • Maintain and develop key areas of the website such as online forms, media releases, paid advertising, the annual photo competition, the homepage, governance pages and board member profiles.
  • Maintain the Gmail accounts for Board members, providing new passwords and email accounts as required.

Social Media Management

Develop and implement a comprehensive social media strategy in conjunction with the Media Working Group and Executive Officer including:

  • Regular (multiple times per week) and timely posts about ESA and ESA member activities and other relevant issues
  • Create, curate and manage all published content (images, video and written) on ESA’s social media channels
  • Monitor, listen and respond to ESA’s Social Media Users.
  • Integrate across the suite of social platforms used by ESA and its website
  • Identify best practice and opportunities to maximise outcomes from social media activity
  • Conduct marketing campaigns on ESA’s social media channels.
  • Maintain authentic and professional communication standards in accordance with ESA’s objectives and policies
  • Monitor social media analytics and providing activity and outcome reports to the Board.

Essential Selection criteria

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience delivering coordinated communication strategy through multiple digital channels such as websites; email; and social media.
  • Experience using a content management system (CMS).
  • Experience with direct marketing via email/social media.
  • Ability to manipulate images using editing tools (such as Photoshop, or similar).
  • Experience and/or knowledge of Google Analytics.
  • Experience and knowledge of multiple social media channels, specifically Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. 

DESIRABLE SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Experience with the not for profit sector
  • Experience in the Environmental Science and/or Science communication sector
  • Multimedia or equivalent qualifications

REMUNERATION

  • $25 - $35 per hour based on experience
  • Some travel may be required to attend meetings eg the annual ESA Board Planning Day, linked to the Annual Conference – in 2018 @ Brisbane Qld (attendance recommended but not compulsory). Travel and accommodation costs in these circumstances will be covered by ESA.
